A Mother Speaks Up

Teresa has two children: a new baby and an older son, who has asthma. When she notices mold on the walls of her laundry room, she worries that it would make her family sick. But Teresa is soft-spoken and doesn’t like to ask for help. She has already alerted the landlord; he did nothing in response.

Teresa shares her concerns with Great Expectations. Her visitor informs her about the effects of mold on babies and young children – validating Teresa’s fears – and walks her through the next steps. Together they practice ways to approach her landlord. When that effort proves unsuccessful, Teresa’s visitor connects her to a community-based legal services organization. A letter from the organization prompts the landlord to remove the mold and repair the leak. Teresa gains confidence in her ability to advocate for herself and keep her family safe.
